Skip Intro... but for eBooks

Amazon | 2022

eBook readers often face friction when navigating non-content pages like preface, forewards or publisher notes. Repeatedly skipping these can disrupt immersion and reduce reading satisfaction, especially for returning readers wanting to drive straight into story or main content.

User needs:

Readers need quick, intuitive way to bypass introductory content and access the main narrative or subject matter directly. They seek uninterrupted immersion, efficient navigation, and personalized reading flows that mirror the convenience of streaming platform.

Solution:

I designed ‘Go to beginning’ feature in Kindle iOS and eReader, enabling user to skip intro pages and jump directly to the start of the core content. The button aapears when reader opens the book for the first time or return to the book after long time. Leveraging metadata and natural breaks in the book’s structure, it directs users to the first chapter.

Impact:

Based on click through rate metrics of eReaders who usually reads their purchased book more than 60%, 8.4 million users (~28%) skipped front matter to start reading main content. These users read 66% more pages on an average, impacting certain Kindle subscription models where payment is tied to page read count.
